Chapter Fifteen

“Who have you been talking to?” The man texted.

“?” The reply came back.

“Received word someone visited the house. Two men asking around,” The man typed out and sent. He could feel the heat rushing up to his ears.

“Get names?”

“Working on it through the rental car. Should have by this afternoon,”

“Let me know,”

“This is not good. I have spent over a year setting this up. We can’t let this unravel. Where did these guys come from?”

“Not an issue. Once we find them, it will be taken care of,”

“What if they found more? I knew we should have built something on that vacant lot,” The man said.

“You are overthinking this,”

“Do not say that to me. If this gets out, we both go down,” The man said.

“You don’t have to remind me. Get those names to me, and it will be taken care of. Stop this conversation,”

The man wanted to continue to text, to try to push his point at how dire of a situation it was that someone had visited that place where the house used to be. He held his breath too long, and his lungs reminded him that more had to happen than think about this secret getting out. He finally let go—both of his breath and the continuation of the text string.

The man’s phone buzzed to life five hours later and startled him from the blank stare he had given his computer screen.

“Alex Granderson & Bill Schilling. I got cc info too. Want it?” The sender asked.

The man was excited at receiving so much information. With name and credit card info, he knew his contacts would easily track down at least one of the men. And if they got to one of the men, they could get to the other.

“Send it,” The man replied to his investigator.

With the credit card number received, the man forwarded it to his contact.

“Get this cleaned up today!” The man texted. He wanted to use all capitals and about ten exclamation points but held his excitement at the moment.

The man jumped up from his chair and began to pace in his office. He wouldn’t take the burner phone home, especially with how much he wanted to be checking it, until he received confirmation that the men were removed from the equation. He decided quickly that he would spend the rest of his day in his office, however long it took to get something back from his source.

“Something wrong. Cc and names don’t hit. Please confirm both,”

“Don’t hit? What does that mean?”

“The names you gave me do not match the credit card number you sent,”

“How is that possible?” The man asked.

“This issue is becoming aggravating. Confirm names. Now.”

The man’s fingers began trembling. Where would he go if his involvement in this was found out? How would he survive if he didn’t have this life he does? So many questions of impending doom filled his head. Slowly he typed his investigators, “names came back wrong with the cc. please confirm all,”

It only took twenty-seven seconds for a reply to return.
